A 50-year-old housewife, Jessinta Tan Suat Lin, has been sentenced to four weeks in jail and fined S$4,600 (US$3,400) for assaulting her neighbor with a mop and pelting her with eggs. The incident occurred when Tan felt that the noise from her neighbor’s jumping rope was disturbing her son, culminating in a violent confrontation. Tan’s actions were also compounded by her threats to kill her husband, leading to a police report being filed by her spouse.
Tan pleaded guilty to committing a rash act, voluntarily causing hurt, and causing alarm with threatening words. While she had hoped for a mandatory treatment order (MTO) due to her diagnosed mixed anxiety-depressive disorder, the judge ruled her unsuitable, and that her condition did not contribute to her criminal behavior.
In detailing the incident, it was revealed that Tan had initiated the confrontation with her neighbor, hitting the woman’s head multiple times, and throwing objects at her, causing injury. The judge emphasized the severity of Tan’s actions, noting that the victim sustained wounds and required medical attention as a result of the assault.
