A 57-year-old Singaporean man was fined $2,000 for urinating at an MRT station, marking the second case in a series of three recent public urination incidents.
Zhou Hongwei pleaded guilty on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, to one charge under the Public Nuisance Act.
The incident occurred at 7:27 PM on January 13, 2025, at the passenger service center of Potong Pasir station on the North-East Line. Court documents showed that Zhou had consumed alcohol before the incident.
Zhou was traveling home to his Sengkang residence from Chinatown MRT station when he felt the urge to urinate. He got off at Potong Pasir station, went to the passenger service center, unzipped his pants, and relieved himself.
A station staff member who saw the act immediately stopped Zhou and called the police. Zhou was arrested on the day of the incident and charged two days later on January 15, 2025.
During legal proceedings, the prosecution requested a fine for Zhou’s offense, leaving the amount to the judge’s discretion. Zhou’s lawyer asked for leniency, stating this was his first offense and that Zhou felt ashamed and remorseful. The lawyer mentioned that Zhou had returned to the station to apologize to staff members.
After reviewing the offense and mitigation factors, the judge imposed a $2,000 fine.
This case follows another recent incident where Li Guorui, a 41-year-old Chinese national, was also fined $2,000 after pleading guilty in January to urinating on the handrail of a descending escalator at Outram Park station. Li was intoxicated when he committed the offense around 10:00 PM on January 10, 2025.
In a third case still under review, Soo Fook Khan, a 53-year-old Singaporean man, allegedly urinated on the platform of Tanah Merah station on the East-West Line at 12:30 PM on January 8, 2025. Soh’s case is scheduled for a pre-trial conference on March 20, 2025.
Additionally, two men were seen urinating side by side on a tree near Toa Payoh MRT station on January 14, 2025, at approximately 9:00 PM.
