The burning smell was reported in various areas including Bedok, Tampines, and Pasir Ris on 2nd February. Residents detected a strong scent resembling smoke or burning material in the air, prompting discussions on social media platforms.
One Reddit user shared their experience by mentioning, “Singapore was smelling ‘smoky.’ I caught a whiff of it at City Hall, but the smell got much stronger when I returned home to Bedok.” Another user noted, “A smell of burnt plastic was detected at Tampines and Pasir Ris, reminding me of the haze.”
According to Reddit threads, numerous individuals echoed similar concerns, indicating that the burning odor extended from the east up to Geylang. One resident expressed frustration, stating, “The smell gave me a headache as I couldn’t close my windows due to a broken air conditioner.”
Speculation arose regarding the source of the smell, with some attributing it to fires or petrochemical fumes from Johor. This theory was supported by past incidents of similar occurrences. A Redditor lamented, “The smell was still lingering in the air at 11.33 pm.”
Meanwhile, the National Environment Agency’s (NEA) haze website indicated that the Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) was in the “moderate” range by midnight. The 1-hour average levels of PM2.5 fine particulate matter were categorized as “Normal” across the east and other regions of Singapore.
