Singapore’s oldest artist Lim Tze Peng passed away at the age of 103. He started painting in the 1950s, while working as a teacher. According to the National Library Board’s (NLB) Infopedia, his paintings are described as deeply rooted in tradition but “exude a contemporary feel at the same time.”
In tribute to Mr. Lim, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong recognized him as one of Singapore’s most significant artists, stating, “Renowned for his ink paintings of old Singapore, he captured the spirit of a rapidly evolving nation through his art.” Wong expressed condolences, acknowledging Mr. Lim’s enduring passion for creativity, which he believed contributed to his longevity.
President Tharman Shanmugaratnam paid tribute to Mr. Lim’s impactful contributions to Singapore art and national identity. He highlighted how Mr. Lim’s life journey, starting from humble beginnings in a kampong in Pasir Ris, exemplified resilience and dedication.
Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat praised Mr. Lim as an iconic figure in Singapore’s art scene, commending his continued dedication and innovation, even in his centennial years. Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Edwin Tong described Mr. Lim as a “massive titan in Singapore’s art scene” and lauded his humble nature and commitment to nurturing young artists.
The Ode to Art Gallery honored Mr. Lim as a national treasure, recognizing his impact on Singapore’s cultural landscape, stating, “Mr. Lim was more than an artist — he was a storyteller, a guardian of our heritage, and a visionary who captured the essence of our changing city with every brushstroke.”
Mr. Lim’s artistic legacy spans eight decades and has been showcased both locally and internationally. His unique “colour calligraphy” and Chinese ink paintings of old Singapore hold significant cultural value. Mr. Lim’s extensive body of work has left an indelible mark on Singapore’s art community. His enduring influence will continue to inspire generations to come.
