Pritam Singh received two convictions at the State Courts on 17 Feb 2025 for lying to the Committee of Privileges (COP).
Deputy Principal District Judge Luke Tan fined Singh S$7,000 for each offense under the Parliament (Privileges, Immunities and Powers) Act, amounting to S$14,000 in total.
The charges stemmed from Singh’s testimonies at COP hearings on 10 Dec and 15 Dec 2021. The first charge involved his statement about wanting Raeesah Khan to clarify her lie after their 8 Aug 2021 meeting. The second charge related to his claim about instructing Khan to correct her testimony if the matter came up on 4 Oct 2021.
The court accepted Khan’s testimony that Singh had told her to “take it to the grave.” Judge Tan found Khan to be a credible witness who showed remorse and provided clear evidence.
Singh remains eligible to run in the upcoming General Election, as confirmed by the Elections Department. The S$10,000 disqualification threshold applies to single offenses and cannot be combined across multiple charges.
Singh’s lawyers, Andre Jumabhoy and Aristotle Eng, have filed an appeal against both the conviction and sentence.
This prosecution is Singapore’s first under the Parliament (Privileges, Immunities and Powers) Act since independence.
The Workers’ Party currently has eight Members of Parliament.
The next General Election must be called by 23 Nov 2025.
