On April 1, 2024, a 55-year-old Indian national driving a tipper truck hit two female secondary school students at the junction of Ayer Rajah Avenue and North Buona Vista Road around 2:19 PM.
The driver failed to check road conditions while making a right turn. He had waited for vehicles from the opposite direction to pass and for some pedestrians to cross before turning, but didn’t notice the two students still crossing the road.
Both students from Fairfield Methodist School (Secondary) were hospitalized. A 13-year-old Secondary 1 student suffered six fractures to her left foot, requiring six surgeries between April 1 and May 8, 2024. She received 67 days of medical leave.
Medical reports indicate the student has limited range of motion in her left foot and experiences pain when walking. Doctors believe this condition may be permanent.
The driver faced charges under the Road Traffic Act. After pleading guilty, he was sentenced to six months in jail. His driving license for all classes was also suspended for five years.
The accident happened during school hours when many students would typically be moving between activities. After the incident, bystanders rushed to help the injured students before emergency services arrived.
Court documents showed the driver was heading to a construction site at Singapore Public Service College when the accident occurred.
