A 55-year-old man received a 10-day jail sentence on March 21, 2025, after fighting in a coffee shop with his sister’s ex-husband. Wen Jin San pleaded guilty to one charge of fighting in public.

The incident happened on November 1, 2023, around 10:15 PM at a coffee shop below Block 19, Marsiling Lane. Both Wen and his sister’s ex-husband, Lee Hong Chuan, 52, were at the location with separate friend groups.

Wen became angry when he saw Lee arguing with his sister. Believing Lee was intimidating her, Wen smashed his beer glass on the floor and pointed at Lee while shouting.

Lee then rushed toward Wen, who grabbed a plastic chair and swung it at Lee. After deflecting the chair, Lee punched Wen in the face, starting a fight that ended with Wen on the ground. Lee continued hitting Wen until two of Lee’s friends separated them.

The conflict nearly started again when Wen stood up and grabbed an empty beer bottle while Lee armed himself with another chair. Lee’s friends prevented further fighting by restraining Wen and taking away the bottle.

CCTV footage played in court showed many customers witnessed the fight. Wen’s lawyer asked for leniency, noting that Lee charged first and threw the initial punch. The lawyer also pointed out that Wen suffered more serious injuries.

The judge ruled that both men were equally responsible for the disturbance, stating neither showed restraint or tried to calm the situation. The judge added that their actions put the public at risk of injury.
