“A 35-year-old renovation contractor who filmed a woman showering in her home was sentenced to four weeks’ jail on Wednesday (Mar 5),” reported Channel NewsAsia. Malaysian Tee Wen Jun, pleaded guilty to one count of voyeurism, having been caught filming a 25-year-old woman in the bathroom. The incident took place while Tee was carrying out renovation works at the victim’s home, and he decided to use the bathroom in the kitchen area, which was separated by a frosted glass partition wall. As the victim was showering, Tee proceeded to film her over the partition wall.
Upon noticing the mobile phone above her in the middle of her shower, the victim screamed and called for her husband, who confronted the accused. After denying any wrongdoing, Tee handed his phone to the witness to examine, and a video of the victim showering was discovered. The prosecution sought a sentence of five to seven weeks’ jail, emphasizing that the recording featured the woman showering in her own home, a place that should be a “safe environment”.
Tee’s lawyer, Patrick Chow, left the sentencing to the court, while Tee, through a court interpreter, inquired about the possibility of a gag order on the case. In response, District Judge Cheng Yuxi clarified that the gag order would only apply to the victim and any details leading to her identification.
