A 36-year-old security manager was sentenced to 10 days in jail after beating his girlfriend with rattan canes when she questioned if he was cheating.
The man, identified as Shairul, pleaded guilty to one count of intentional assault in court yesterday.
The couple met on a dating app in August 2022. Their relationship moved quickly, with the 25-year-old victim moving into his home just two months after they met.
Problems began when the victim suspected her boyfriend of infidelity. These suspicions led to a confrontation on October 18 at 9:00 AM, when she entered his bedroom to ask if he had found someone new.
The accused had just finished his night shift and was resting in bed when the questioning started.
The argument escalated when she demanded he delete her photos from his phone, which he refused. As she continued questioning him, he became increasingly agitated.
In a burst of anger, he grabbed rattan canes from a black box in the room and began whipping her face and arms repeatedly. The victim cried throughout the assault but managed to record parts of the incident on her phone as evidence.
After the beating, he showed her his phone screen to prove he had deleted her photos as requested.
Around 1:00 PM that day, the victim packed her belongings and fled to Malaysia. After a day of consideration, she returned to Singapore to file a police report.
When officers saw her injuries, which were still visible and serious, they immediately called an ambulance. She was taken to the hospital for medical treatment and assessment of her injuries.
The court considered the severity of the assault and the relationship context when determining the 10-day jail sentence.
