A Singaporean man, Shanmugam Sundar Darmaraju, found himself in legal trouble after being charged with importing a significant amount of drugs into Australia. The charges against him involve two counts of importing a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug. Following his arrival in Sydney on a flight from Malaysia, the 55-year-old man was promptly detained by Australian Border Force (ABF) officers. The authorities detailed the initial encounter, stating, “The man allegedly claimed he was not travelling with any checked luggage and was initially cleared to depart Sydney Airport.”
ABF officers soon made a startling discovery, finding two abandoned suitcases on a luggage carousel supposedly belonging to Darmaraju. Upon inspection, it was revealed that the suitcases contained around 32kg of methamphetamine and 8kg of cocaine, both of which carry significant street value. Subsequently, the police initiated a search for the individual, which led to Darmaraju being apprehended at the airport in Adelaide while attempting to board a flight to Malaysia.
The seized drugs have been estimated to have a considerable street value, with the methamphetamine valued at A$29.6 million (US$18.8 million) and the cocaine valued at A$2.6 million. The charges against Darmaraju carry a maximum penalty of life imprisonment, emphasizing the seriousness of the allegations.
Singapore’s Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) acknowledged the situation, stating, “CNB will render the required assistance to our counterparts in Australia to aid their investigation.” With ongoing investigations, the CNB refrained from commenting further on the matter at the present time.
