The incident involving a Singaporean woman encountering an issue at the Johor Bahru checkpoint due to torn passport pages was certainly a cause for concern. As reported by MustShareNews, the woman, Li Lihong, encountered an officer at the checkpoint who demanded a payment of RM200 (equivalent to S$60) after finding torn pages in her passport.
According to the article, Li Lihong and her companions were on their way to Malaysia for a Chinese New Year gathering when the incident occurred on 23rd February. The officer at the checkpoint discovered the torn pages in her passport and requested the payment before allowing her to pass through. The situation escalated as Li Liho only had RM50 (S$15) on her, prompting the officer to settle for at least RM100 (S$30) before permitting her group to proceed.
In her perplexity over the incident, Li Lihong returned to Singapore without further issues and promptly applied for a new passport. Reflecting on the experience, she expressed bewilderment over how her passport got damaged, especially considering that it was renewed just two years ago and was set to expire in 2033. Despite her efforts to maintain the integrity of her travel documents, the unexpected encounter at the JB checkpoint left her puzzled.
While queries were directed to Malaysian authorities, including the Immigration Department in Johor and relevant officials, responses were still pending at the time of the report. In line with guidelines from Singapore’s Immigration & Checkpoints Authority, a damaged Singapore passport should be replaced promptly to avoid potential complications.
