Singapore’s very own Yeo Jia Min enjoyed a remarkable victory at the German Open, clinching her first Badminton World Federation (BWF) title since 2019. Yeo, currently ranked at world number 13, emerged victorious after triumphing over Vietnam’s Nguyen Thuy Linh on Sunday (Mar 2). The intense showdown at the Westenergie Sporthalle in Mulheim, Germany saw Singapore’s top women’s singles player seizing victory with a score of 21-16, 21-17 in just 41 minutes.
26-year-old Yeo had previously experienced a title drought since her last BWF victory at the Super 100 Hyderabad Open in August 2019, with her most recent title being the Polish Open, an International Challenge event one grade below the BWF World Tour structure. Yeo entered the clash with a superior head-to-head record (3-1) against world ranked 29 Nguyen, having previously defeated her in this year’s Indian Open.
In the moments leading up to her championship win, Yeo demonstrated immense skill and resilience. Following an impressive win over Denmark’s defending champion Mia Blichfeldt, Yeo powered through to take an 11-7 lead at the interval. However, the Vietnamese sixth seed, Nguyen, managed to mount a comeback, narrowing the deficit to just two points before Yeo secured the first game.
Even as Nguyen briefly took the lead at 2-1 in the second game, Yeo’s superb net play and a series of unforced errors from her opponent granted the Singaporean a five-point advantage at the interval. Despite Nguyen’s determined efforts to bridge the gap, Yeo maintained her composure, ultimately securing her first Super 300 title at the German Open.
In her elation following the victory, Yeo expressed her gratitude to Coach Kim Ji Hyun for their collaborative efforts in achieving this long-awaited breakthrough. Yeo highlighted, “This victory means a lot to me to win this title. Coach Kim Ji Hyun and I set this goal in the beginning of the year and I’m so happy to finally have this breakthrough.”
Yeo went on to emphasize the importance of adaptation and consistency in her matches, acknowledging the arduous journey she embarked on, and expressing her deep appreciation for Coach Kim’s guidance. She added, “The ability to adapt to any player and any situation is key. I know I have to be consistent everyday in order to win a title. The struggle has been a long one but I kept believing that I can do it, and I’m grateful for coach Kim to guide me along the way.”
With this triumphant victory, Yeo’s perseverance and determination have not gone unnoticed, marking a significant milestone in her badminton career, and reflecting positively on Singapore’s representation in the international sporting arena.
