A 36-year-old woman bit into a rusty nail while eating walnut cake from Cookhouse by Koufu food court at Waterway Point in Punggol, reported Shin Min Daily News.
Ms. Rong’s husband purchased the slice of walnut cake for $1.30 from a drink stall at the food court on March 14, 2025, around 3pm.
She discovered the rusty nail after feeling something hard in her mouth and immediately spitting it out.
After reporting the incident to the food court manager, she received a refund for the cake and a free bowl of dessert. The manager suggested she seek medical treatment and return with the receipt for compensation.
Ms. Rong visited a clinic and received a tetanus shot, costing $105. The food court manager paid this bill when she returned with the receipt.
The next day, Ms. Rong developed headaches, body aches, and neck stiffness. She sought medical attention again on March 16, 2025, spending $112 on medications for headache, cold, and allergies.
While the manager covered this second medical bill, he informed her that future claims would need to be directed to Koufu via email.
Koufu later contacted Ms. Rong by email, offering a $100 gift voucher and an apology. She collected the voucher at Waterway Point.
On March 18, 2025, Ms. Rong reportedly sprained her neck while buying groceries. Believing this was connected to the stiffness developed after the incident, she visited a Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner, receiving treatment costing $126.
Ms. Rong emailed the TCM receipt to Koufu but had not received a response at the time of reporting.
She claimed she had been unable to work for a week due to fear of moving her neck suddenly. The TCM practitioner indicated she might need additional treatment.
Ms. Rong stated the incident has made her afraid to purchase cakes from the same brand.
