Yishun residents created a 9.2-meter long grilled glutinous rice dish at their local Ramadan bazaar over the weekend, setting a new Singapore record.
The Ramadan Bazaar at Yishun MRT station opened on Saturday evening (8 Mar 2025). Organized by the Yishun Central Merchants’ Association, this year’s bazaar has grown to more than 50 stalls, up from about 15 last year.
Minister for Home Affairs and Law K. Shanmugam and four other Nee Soon GRC MPs—Dr. Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, Louis Ng, Carrie Tan, and Derrick Goh—attended the event. They joined residents in grilling the record-breaking glutinous rice dish (pulut panggang).
Associate Professor Dr. Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim noted that many food vendors at the bazaar are local Yishun business operators. “Yishun has always been a kampung, and the kampung spirit here has always been strong, thriving in the modern environment,” he said.
The bazaar has attracted residents of different races, showing Singapore’s social cohesion during cultural celebrations.
Dr. Faishal told zaobao.sg that his team is working to integrate new residents who have moved into recently completed Build-To-Order (BTO) flats while helping existing residents understand newcomers’ needs.
The bazaar will continue until March 23, 2025.
