A 23-year-old man died while taking part in the 2XU Compression Run on April 27, 2025.
Police responded to a call for help along Raffles Avenue around 6:25am. The man was brought to the hospital unconscious and was later pronounced dead.
Initial police investigations found no signs of foul play. The investigation is still ongoing.
The 2XU Compression Run organizers shared their condolences in an Instagram statement posted that same day.
“We are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of one of our participants at this morning’s 2XU Compression Run,” they wrote. “Our deepest condolences are with the family and friends during this difficult time.”
The organizers stated they cannot provide more information as police are investigating the case.
The race began around 4:15am at the F1 Pit Building with over 20,000 people participating. Runners competed in three categories: 5km, 10km, and 21.1km.
In a different Instagram post after the event, organizers apologized for shortcomings, including a course distance that “did not meet expectations” and crowding in some parts of the route.
This isn’t the first death at the 2XU Compression Run. In 2014, 45-year-old Martynn Koh Tong Yong collapsed during the event and later died in hospital.
More recently, a participant in the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon in December 2024 died after finishing the race. That runner received medical care on-site before being taken to Singapore General Hospital, where they passed away.
The December incident was the third death since the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon began in 2002.
In 2011, a 22-year-old man died from acute coronary insufficiency after completing a half marathon. He had an undetected abnormal coronary artery.
