A gas pipeline fire broke out in Putra Heights, Malaysia, on April 1, 2025. The incident injured 33 people and forced nearby residents to leave their homes during Eid celebrations.
Of the injured, six people needed hospital treatment, according to the fire department. The fire started at a gas pipeline run by state energy company Petronas near Kuala Lumpur.
The flames were visible from Subang Jaya. Seven residents had to be rescued after several homes caught fire.
A Subang Jaya Fire and Rescue Station spokesperson said they received an emergency call at 8:10 AM. “The fire is located along Jalan Putra Harmoni. Teams from the Subang Jaya, Shah Alam and Puchong fire stations were deployed and are active on-site,” the spokesperson said.
The fire department reported that the blaze was caused by “a gas pipeline leak stretching approximately 500m.”
Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) confirmed the fire happened at Petronas Gas Bhd’s (PGB) main pipeline near Putra Heights, Puchong, Selangor. The company reported that the affected pipeline has been isolated and the valve to the affected pipeline shut off. All relevant stakeholders have been informed.
“We are currently working closely with the local authorities to manage the situation, and we will provide additional information in due course as the investigation is still being carried out,” Petronas said in a statement.
Three nearby retail stations — PS Putra Heights, PS KM2 LDP and PS Putra Bestari — were not affected but have been temporarily closed as a precaution.
The company stated that the safety of the surrounding community and environment and the security of gas supply to the nation continue to be its priority.
Subang Jaya MP Wong Chen confirmed in a statement that the fire had broken out at a petrol station in Putra Heights. “All citizens are advised to be on full alert. We will provide more Bomba (Fire and Rescue Department) updates when received. Bomba helicopter is also on the way,” he said.
A resident living about 200m from the fire told The Star newspaper: “All of a sudden, we heard a loud bang and then total chaos. We immediately left the house and soon saw other residents leaving too.”
