A 62-year-old man has turned himself in to Malaysian police following a hit-and-run accident that killed actor Shaun Chen’s father on March 28, 2025.
The driver of a Proton Iswara reported to the Jelebu police’s Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division at 4:38PM on the day of the accident, according to Negeri Sembilan authorities.
Police stated the collision occurred at 10:30AM at KM 53 Jalan Seremban-Simpang Pertang. The 84-year-old victim was riding a Honda EX-5 motorcycle when he was struck. He was transported to Jelebu Hospital but died while receiving treatment at approximately 2:30PM.
The driver, identified as a Malay man, tested negative in a urine screening test after surrendering. Police did not specify which substances were tested for.
Chen, 46, who currently appears in the Mediacorp drama “Emerald Hill – The Little Nyonya Story,” had posted a video of the crash on Instagram. The footage shows a car speeding away after hitting his father, who was left motionless on the ground. Chen made a plea in the video asking the driver to come forward and apologize.
The actor was vacationing with his family in Bangkok when he learned of his father’s death. He has returned to Negeri Sembilan for funeral arrangements.
Speaking to Malaysian media 8TV at the wake, Chen said: “The police say the perpetrator has surrendered and has been arrested. But as for what the situation will be like in the future, I have no idea. I also don’t know what he will be charged with and how he will be punished. I will speak to the police after settling my father’s affairs.”
Chen raised concerns about emergency medical response times in the area. He stated his father remained on the ground for half an hour before an ambulance arrived, and it took over an hour from the accident for him to reach the hospital.
“By the time he got to the hospital, it had been over an hour from when the crash occurred, and he likely missed the critical period to receive treatment just like that,” Chen said.
The actor described his father as a healthy and optimistic man who raised seven children while operating a provision store. Chen reportedly last saw his father two weeks before the accident at a relative’s wedding in Kuala Lumpur.
The funeral and cremation for Chen’s father took place on April 1, 2025.
