A 28-year-old clinic assistant was sentenced to 14 months in prison after defrauding more than 500 patients of over $50,000 in six months by replacing the clinic’s payment QR code with her own.
Amira Nur Hudah Mohamed pleaded guilty to one charge of fraud at the State Courts on Monday (April 14, 2025). The judge considered another charge related to gambling control laws when sentencing.
The woman worked as an assistant at a clinic located at 86 Marine Parade Road from July 2022 to June 2023. Her job included registering patients, dispensing medication, and collecting payments. The clinic accepted only cash or PayNow transfers.
Between January 5 and January 10, 2023, she gave four patients her mobile number instead of the clinic’s for PayNow payments. Through this method, she collected $392.
Her scheme grew bolder in February, when she collected $3,273.54 from 21 patients and issued official clinic receipts to make the transactions seem legitimate.
The fraud expanded rapidly. Between March 9 and March 28, she used the same trick to steal $8,839.63 from 75 patients.
From April 2023, she upgraded her method by replacing the QR code at the counter during her shifts. She switched the original QR code linked to the doctor’s account with one linked to her personal account. When patients scanned the code, money went directly to her bank account.
Before ending her shift, she would switch back to the original QR code to avoid detection.
Using this enhanced method, she collected $19,883.56 from 183 patients in April, $15,653.27 from 153 patients in May, and $7,395.12 from 73 patients in early June.
In total, over approximately six months, she defrauded 509 patients of $55,437.12, with the fraud growing month by month as she refined her techniques.
Court documents showed the woman spent all the stolen money on illegal gambling websites and lost everything. Despite the large sum stolen, she has only returned $3,000 to the clinic.
