The Progress Singapore Party (PSP) has unveiled its four-member team for Chua Chu Kang GRC, with former Singapore Manufacturing Federation (SMF) secretary-general Lawrence Pek making his political debut.
Mr Pek, 55, served as SMF’s secretary-general from July 2020 to April 2023, where he played a key role in supporting the growth and global competitiveness of Singapore’s manufacturing sector. His addition brings a notable leadership background to the PSP’s slate.
Joining him are three candidates with previous electoral experience: intellectual property and technology lawyer Wendy Low, 48, and safety practitioner A’bas Kasmani, 71, who contested Tanjong Pagar GRC in 2020, as well as a chartered accountant and stockbroker, 60, a former Nee Soon GRC candidate.
PSP chairman Dr Tan Cheng Bock introduced the team during a walkabout at Teck Whye Lane on April 19, where he also confirmed that veteran IT professional Harish Pillay, 65, will stand in the newly created Bukit Gombak SMC.
Mr Harish previously contested in Tanjong Pagar GRC during the last general election.
PSP’s Chua Chu Kang team will go head-to-head with a refreshed PAP slate led by Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong, which includes incumbent MP Zhulkarnain Abdul Rahim, and new faces Jeffrey Siow, a former senior civil servant, and neurologist Choo Pei Ling.
The GRC now includes the Tengah estate, previously part of Hong Kah North SMC, while Bukit Gombak has been carved out as a single-seat constituency to be contested by PAP’s Low Yen Ling.
In GE2020, Chua Chu Kang was one of PSP’s strongest showings, with the party securing 41.36% of the vote – behind only West Coast and Marymount. The PAP team won with 58.64%, a significant dip from their 2015 performance.
With a mix of experience and new faces, the PSP hopes to build on its previous momentum as it mounts its second challenge in Chua Chu Kang GRC.
