Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong warned on April 27 that Singapore’s changed, troubled world demands a strong government — and that voters must not gamble by weakening it.
Speaking at a rally in Fernvale, SM Lee stressed that economic and global challenges are not temporary and will make jobs and growth harder to secure. “The world has changed… we have to be psychologically prepared,” he said.
He urged voters not to “play games” by voting opposition for a few extra voices, warning that losing capable ministers could jeopardize Singapore’s future. “Good government is about good people… and you must first vote them in,” he said, citing Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong’s critical role in managing trade talks amid US tariffs.
SM Lee emphasized that strong leadership during crises — like the pandemic — had saved lives, and similar leadership is needed for upcoming economic storms. “You lose one minister, maybe make do. You lose three? I’m in some trouble,” he warned.
Even the opposition knows the PAP has done its job, SM Lee said, noting that they assure voters PAP will still form the government even if they win more seats.

The rally also featured Ang Mo Kio GRC candidates, labour chief Ng Chee Meng (Jalan Kayu), Henry Kwek (Kebun Baru), and Yip Hon Weng (Yio Chu Kang). MPs like Darryl David and Yip defended PAP backbenchers against claims they were “silent,” highlighting their active, behind-the-scenes work shaping policies.
SM Lee closed by urging Singaporeans to focus on steady leadership in stormy times. “We speak the truth to you and to everyone,” he said. “That is one thing which can keep Singapore special for many years to come.”
