As Singapore anticipates the next General Election (GE2025), Pioneer Single Member Constituency (SMC) is poised to be an area of electoral interest. The People’s Action Party (PAP) incumbent, Patrick Tay, is set to engage with residents, highlighting his work within the community. Other political parties have also indicated their intention to contest the SMC, leading to an election that will garner attention from those watching the political landscape.
Patrick Tay, the current MP, is also the assistant secretary-general of the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) and has been a vocal advocate for workers’ rights, particularly those of Professionals, Managers, and Executives (PMEs).
Patrick Tay: Advocating for Workers and Engaging the Community
Mr. Tay has consistently raised issues in Parliament relating to workplace fairness and security. His contributions include:
- Advocating for stronger workplace fairness laws.
- Pushing for increased support for retrenched or involuntarily unemployed workers.
- Emphasizing the importance of fair hiring practices.
- Supporting reskilling initiatives for PMEs.
One of his biggest pushes was for the Workplace Fairness Legislation, which will soon become law. This is a big step forward in giving Singaporean workers more protection at the workplace.
“I hope to support our residents, to journey with you together in the next five years,” said Mr. Tay on Tuesday (Apr 15) at the PAP’s West Coast branch office, where his candidacy was announced. He expressed gratitude to Pioneer residents for their “love, support (and) encouragement” over the past five years, noting the community volunteer programmes addressing healthcare, education, and employment needs.
He also highlighted the infrastructure and living environment upgrades in the constituency.
Acknowledging the presence of other parties, Mr. Tay mentioned, “In the very first year, in 2020, we … visited almost every household.” He emphasized the active engagement of his team and the contributions of resident volunteers in improving Pioneer. “I hope for the support to be able to continue to do that and to build on what we’ve done in the last couple of years and see through some of (our) projects and programmes.”
Potential Candidates in Pioneer SMC
Several individuals may contest the Pioneer SMC seat in the upcoming election:
- People’s Action Party (PAP):
- Patrick Tay: The incumbent Member of Parliament.
- Progress Singapore Party (PSP):
- The PSP has stated their intention to field a candidate. Potential candidates include Lim Cher Hong (previous election candidate) and Stephanie Tan (seen at recent walkabouts).
