Health Minister Ong Ye Kung said he expects a three-cornered fight in Sembawang GRC for GE2025, giving residents “more choices” as they exercise their democratic right to vote.
Speaking at a community event on April 6, Mr Ong, who anchors the PAP team in Sembawang, said the party would contest the election based on its values, track record, and forward-looking plans.
“We let our actions do the talking,” he said, noting upcoming plans include the transformation of the Sembawang Shipyard area into a future seafront district. Other achievements cited included the opening of the Thomson-East Coast Line and the Northern Explorer Loop park connector.
Earlier that day, the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) unveiled its slate for Sembawang GRC, while the National Solidarity Party (NSP) was also on the ground in Woodlands, signalling a possible three-way contest. SDP has also announced that its chief, Dr Chee Soon Juan, will contest Sembawang West SMC, newly carved out from Ms Poh Li San’s current ward.
Mr Ong remarked that while Dr Chee is a familiar national figure, residents “know who has been working for them all these years” and would vote accordingly.
Two new PAP faces — Mr Gabriel Lam and Mr Ng Shi Xuan — joined the Sembawang team at the event. Mr Lam is COO of Shalom Movers and a long-time advocate with Yellow Ribbon Singapore. Mr Ng, who volunteered in MacPherson for a decade, hopes to support young families and single parents in the area.
While the final PAP slate remains unconfirmed, Mr Ong said residents could “infer” the line-up based on community involvement.
The GRC’s final line-up, including the status of long-serving MP Dr Lim Wee Kiak, is expected to be confirmed closer to Nomination Day.
