The People’s Power Party (PPP) will field a team in Ang Mo Kio GRC for the upcoming General Election, directly challenging Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong, said PPP secretary-general Goh Meng Seng on April 5.
Speaking after a walkabout at Chong Boon Market and Food Centre, Mr Goh said the party’s manifesto focuses on what he described as the “mismanagement of population policies” over the past two decades during Mr Lee’s tenure as Prime Minister.
“Now that he has stepped down, it is about time for him to take his real report card from the people,” Mr Goh said.
SM Lee remains anchor minister in Ang Mo Kio GRC, where his People’s Action Party (PAP) team secured 71.9% of the vote in GE2020 against the Reform Party.
While acknowledging the PAP’s strong showing in 2020 due to the Covid-19 crisis, Mr Goh believes PPP could achieve a strong result this time, even if it does not win the seat.
The PPP team will be led by party treasurer William Lim, 47, a limousine service provider with over 15 years in the transport industry. Mr Lim said he aims to speak out against policies he sees as infringing on the rights of Singaporeans.
The full slate will be announced later. The party also introduced three potential candidates: safety coordinator Thaddeus Thomas, 43; horticulturist Heng Zheng Dao, 24; and Samuel Lee, 33, who is currently unemployed.
Mr Goh also reiterated PPP’s positions on various issues, including opposition to compulsory vaccination, concern over nuclear power safety, and the belief that national policies should prioritise Singaporeans’ needs in housing, employment, and low total fertility rate.
The Singapore United Party has also indicated interest in Ang Mo Kio GRC. Mr Goh said he has reached out in hopes of avoiding a three-cornered fight.
