West Coast-Jurong West GRC is shaping up to be one of GE2025’s most closely watched battlegrounds, as the Progress Singapore Party (PSP) looks set to return with its top team to challenge a refreshed People’s Action Party (PAP) slate.
In 2020, PAP narrowly won the GRC’s previous version with 51.68% of votes against a PSP team led by Dr Tan Cheng Bock. The GRC now includes about 41,000 voters from Jurong GRC — particularly from PAP stronghold Taman Jurong, formerly under President Tharman Shanmugaratnam — a shift analysts say could bolster PAP’s chances.
Still, PSP’s national profile has grown, with NCMPs Leong Mun Wai and Hazel Poa gaining visibility in Parliament. Both are expected to contest again alongside Dr Tan.
On the PAP side, National Development Minister Desmond Lee has stepped up following former MP S. Iswaran’s resignation. The full slate remains unconfirmed, though Mr Lee recently introduced new face Natasha Choy, a trade unionist. Other potential candidates include Shawn Huang, who now oversees Taman Jurong, and orthopaedic surgeon Dr Hamid Razak, who has been active in Jurong Spring.
Residents in the constituency cited inflation, housing maintenance and estate upgrades as key concerns. Many acknowledged recent government efforts — including upgraded lifts, improved sheltered walkways, and family support schemes — but expressed hope for sustained assistance amid rising costs.
The PAP noted it has rolled out multiple community and jobs initiatives over the past five years, while the PSP said it is working to connect with new voters brought into the redrawn GRC.
With both parties keeping their full line-ups under wraps, observers expect a high-stakes contest, with potential last-minute surprises on Nomination Day.
As one Taman Jurong resident put it, “This will come down to credibility — and who earns the trust to serve.”
