The Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) has officially introduced its five-member team for Sembawang GRC ahead of the upcoming General Election.
Announced by SDP chairman Professor Paul Tambyah during a media doorstop at Kampung Admiralty on April 6, the line-up includes deputy head of policy James Gomez, vice-chairman Bryan Lim, treasurer Surayah Akbar, and party members Alfred Tan and Damanhuri Abas.
The SDP team was seen distributing flyers and engaging with residents in the area, where they also encountered representatives from the National Solidarity Party (NSP) — another party that has indicated plans to contest the GRC. If both proceed, it could result in a three-cornered fight.
SDP last contested Sembawang GRC in GE2011, securing 36.1 per cent of the vote. In GE2020, the People’s Action Party (PAP) team led by Health Minister Ong Ye Kung won against NSP with 67.29 per cent of the vote.
The current PAP team also includes Dr Lim Wee Kiak, Ms Mariam Jaafar, Ms Poh Li San, and Mr Vikram Nair. On March 29, Mr Ong introduced two new potential candidates: Mr Ng Shi Xuan, director of Powermark Battery & Hardware, and Mr Gabriel Lam, COO of Shalom International Movers.
Separately, SDP has announced that party secretary-general Dr Chee Soon Juan will be contesting the new Sembawang West SMC, while Prof Tambyah will defend his previous seat in Bukit Panjang SMC. The party also intends to contest Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC, currently helmed by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong.
With more than one opposition party eyeing Sembawang, and new faces entering the fray from both sides, the GRC could see a competitive battle shaping up in GE2025.
