The opposition Singapore United Party (SUP) will challenge the ruling party in Ang Mo Kio GRC at the upcoming general election, fielding a five-member slate to go up against a PAP team led by Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
The SUP team is headed by party secretary-general Andy Zhu, 42. It includes first-time candidate Nigel Ng, 39, a flight attendant, along with SUP chairman Ridhuan Chandran, 53, a lecturer and consultant, and Ms Noraini Yunus, 57. Rounding off the slate is Dr Vincent Ng, 52, who previously contested in Tampines GRC under the National Solidarity Party (NSP) in 2020.
The candidates were introduced at a press briefing on April 17 at Kebun Baru Food Centre. The event started more than 45 minutes late and concluded within 10 minutes, with no questions taken from reporters.
Mr Zhu said SUP’s goal is to work collaboratively with the government towards a more just and equitable Singapore. The party’s campaign slogan – “Moving Forward, Together” – emphasises community partnership and unity.
SUP has not released its manifesto yet but said it will be guided by feedback from residents. Key issues the party aims to address include the cost of living, housing affordability, healthcare access, and removing GST on basic necessities.
The party was formed in 2020 by ex-members of the Reform Party, including Mr Zhu and Ms Noraini. They contested Ang Mo Kio GRC in GE2020 and secured 28.09 per cent of the vote against the PAP team, which won 71.91 per cent.
SUP is also part of The Coalition, an informal alliance of opposition parties that includes the NSP, Red Dot United, and Singapore People’s Party. However, internal disagreements over electoral coordination recently saw Red Dot United withdraw from the alliance.
Despite efforts to avoid a three-way fight in Ang Mo Kio, SUP has yet to reach a resolution with the People’s Power Party.
