The Singapore United Party (SUP) has confirmed it will contest Ang Mo Kio GRC in the upcoming General Election, marking its electoral debut since being formed in December 2020.
SUP secretary-general Andy Zhu made the announcement during a walkabout at Chong Boon Market and Food Centre on April 6. He said he is likely to lead the party’s team against the People’s Action Party (PAP), which is anchored by Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
This sets the stage for a possible three-cornered fight, as the People’s Power Party (PPP) had declared its intention to contest the same GRC a day earlier.
Although SUP is a new party, several of its core members previously contested Ang Mo Kio under the Reform Party (RP) banner in GE2020, garnering 28.09% of the vote. Mr Zhu, along with deputy secretary-general Darren Soh and treasurer Noraini Yunus, were part of that team and are now leading SUP’s effort. SUP chairman Ridhuan Chandran also joined them during the walkabout.
Mr Zhu, 42, said he is confident contesting in Ang Mo Kio, noting the support for alternative voices in the ward. “I don’t really see contesting in SM Lee’s ward as a difficulty,” he said. “What I’m doing is to represent the residents.”
He added that SUP has spoken with PPP to avoid a three-way contest, but no resolution has been reached. SUP has also received the blessings of RP, which will not be contesting the GRC.
SUP’s campaign slogan is “Moving forward, together”, which Mr Zhu said reflects the party’s aim to walk alongside residents.
SUP plans to unveil its full candidate slate and manifesto when the Writ of Election is issued.
