The Workers’ Party (WP) on April 18 introduced four more new candidates for the upcoming general election, bringing its total of first-time candidates unveiled so far to eight.
The latest slate includes:
- Dr Ong Lue Ping, 48, senior principal clinical psychologist at the Institute of Mental Health;
- Mr Andre Low, 34, staff project manager at a global fintech company;
- Ms Alexis Dang, 39, senior director at ad-tech firm Teads;
- Mr Jimmy Tan, 53, co-founder of an industrial equipment business.
WP chief Pritam Singh and chair Sylvia Lim presented the quartet at a press conference, without confirming which constituencies they will contest.
Dr Ong Lue Ping, a long-time public mental health professional and former director of allied health at IMH, said he left his leadership post to address structural issues affecting mental health in Singapore. He also advocated for an optional 10-year education track without the PSLE, aligning with WP’s new manifesto.
Mr Andre Low Wu Yang, a lawyer-turned-consultant, joined WP shortly before the 2020 election and quickly became an aide to Sengkang MP Louis Chua. Now expecting his first child, he said his work on the ground showed him the policy gaps faced by single parents and elderly residents.
Ms Alexis Dang Pei Yuan, who transitioned from banking to tech, said she was drawn to WP’s mission of adding diverse voices to Parliament. A strong advocate for bilingual education, she has helped translate party speeches and organised cultural events.
Mr Jimmy Tan, has been involved with WP since 2018 and now serves as legislative assistant to Mr Singh. He said his interest in politics was sparked in 2016, following constitutional changes to the presidency. Having walked the ground in Tampines, he is likely to be fielded there.
WP is expected to field around 31 candidates across eight constituencies, including a record 17 newcomers – its largest slate of fresh faces yet.
