Workers’ Party (WP) potential candidate Kenneth Tiong was seen with senior party leaders at a community event in Bedok Reservoir on April 12, sparking speculation that he could be fielded in Aljunied GRC at the upcoming general election.
Mr Tiong, 36, is director of tech start-up Sensemake AI and has been active on the ground since 2024, coordinating Meet-the-People Sessions in Serangoon – a ward left vacant since former MP Leon Perera stepped down last July.
He attended the Neighbourhood Conversations event alongside WP chief Pritam Singh, party chairwoman Sylvia Lim, and Aljunied MPs Mr Faisal Manap and Mr Gerald Giam. Hougang MP Dennis Tan was also present. The event was held at Block 122 Bedok Reservoir Road, in Mr Singh’s Eunos ward.
Both Mr Singh and Mr Tiong declined to comment when approached by The Straits Times.
Mr Tiong has also been spotted with WP MPs at mosque and temple visits and has appeared in social media posts by party leaders. In a March 26 Facebook post, he said he felt “compelled to step up and play a more active role” in shaping Singapore’s future.
Also at the April 12 event were two other likely WP candidates: Mr Abdul Muhaimin Abdul Malik, 35, a senior property manager with Aljunied-Hougang Town Council who is expected to stand in Sengkang GRC, and Mr Jimmy Tan, 53, a legislative assistant to Mr Singh and a potential candidate for Tampines GRC.
There has been speculation that Mr Singh may lead the WP team in neighbouring East Coast GRC, where the party polled 46.6 per cent in 2020 against a PAP slate led by Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat.
At the event, Eunos resident Ivy Lim, 75, shared concerns with Mr Singh about how seniors struggle to adapt to technology like ride-hailing apps. “It’s very difficult for seniors like me to keep up,” she said.
