Singapore is gearing up for the upcoming General Election, with Tampines and Ang Mo Kio Group Representation Constituencies (GRCs) expected to see intense competition. The People’s Power Party (PPP) announced on April 22 its intention to contest in both constituencies.
Initially, the PPP had its sights set on Tampines Changkat Single Member Constituency (SMC), Nee Soon GRC, and Jalan Kayu SMC. However, they later withdrew from Nee Soon GRC to avoid overlapping with Red Dot United. PPP secretary-general Goh Meng Seng explained this decision, stating, “there are a lot of contestants in different places with conflicted interests.”
Addressing the withdrawal from Tampines Changkat and Jalan Kayu, Goh Meng Seng said, “As a party, we also want to give respect to the bigger parties… we have decided that we will actually have to disappoint our candidates, as well as our supporters.”
Tampines GRC is shaping up to be a key battleground, with potentially multiple parties vying for seats. The Workers’ Party has also indicated their intention to contest, and the National Solidarity Party (NSP) is another potential contender. Leading the People’s Power Party (PPP) team in Tampines GRC is secretary-general Goh Meng Seng, accompanied by landscaping executive Vere Nathan, founder of a green technology firm Peter Soh, entrepreneur Arbaah Haroun, and party chairman Derrick Sim, who is a financial planner.
For Ang Mo Kio GRC, the PPP team will be led by party treasurer and limousine service provider William Lim. The other candidates on the PPP Ang Mo Kio team are former civil servant Martinn Ho, safety coordinator Thaddeus Thomas, horticulturist Heng Zheng Dao, and IT engineer Samuel Lee. They will face off against the PAP team led by Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong and the Singapore United Party (SUP). Goh Meng Seng acknowledged the potential for conflict, apologizing to the NSP and SUP for “this conflict.”
The PPP’s manifesto outlines several policy proposals, including monthly payouts of $300 for children from lower-income families, a reduction in employees’ Central Provident Fund contributions to 5%, and the exemption of essential groceries and healthcare services from the goods and services tax.
