Former radio DJ Billy Wang, who resides in Jiangsu, China, returned to Singapore to vote in the upcoming general elections.

Wang’s return to Singapore late last year sparked comments about his weight gain. He admitted feeling dissatisfied with his increased size, which motivated his decision to lose weight. In a three-month period, Wang shed 21kg, dropping from 121kg to 100kg.

Wang arrived in Singapore two days ago and immediately visited Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park, where he performed stretching exercises with over 100 fans in attendance.

In an interview with Shin Min Daily News, Wang shared his weight loss approach: “I eat very small portions with balanced nutrition. During daytime hours, I consume large amounts of pu’er tea, and I prioritize quality sleep.”

“For month one, I focused solely on minimal food intake without exercise. In the second month, I began with slow jogging—10 minutes each morning, afternoon, and evening. After two weeks, I added stretching exercises. I avoided all snacks throughout this process,” Wang explained.

Wang, who turned 60 last year, described his health journey as becoming “a good doctor through long illness.” Over two decades, he has experienced many cycles of weight fluctuation but consistently managed to reduce his weight when needed.

He acknowledged the difficulty of weight loss while taking medication and maintaining work commitments. “Obesity side effects from medication create the most difficult and frightening health challenges. Without others sharing my exact experience, I rely on willpower to achieve what seems impossible,” Wang stated.

During the pandemic, Wang faced multiple health challenges. In July 2021, he underwent surgery for a torn meniscus, followed by surgery for a detached retina in September. The following year required additional surgery for a herniated lumbar disc, and in November 2022, he was hospitalized with COVID-19.

These health issues temporarily prevented Wang from exercising and contributed to weight gain from medication side effects. Previously, Wang maintained his weight between 88kg and 92kg. Last year’s weight increase affected his self-image and confidence.

The additional weight impacted his daily activities, making walking, putting on shoes, and personal hygiene difficult. Wang noted that his internal organs seemed to be deteriorating at a faster rate.

These physical limitations affected his daily routine and emotional state, prompting his commitment to reach his weight loss goal.

Beyond meeting fans and promoting exercise among seniors during his Singapore visit, Wang is fulfilling his civic responsibilities by voting in the general election. He became a Singapore citizen on April 1, 1992, and votes in the Nee Soon district.
