A primary school teacher in Taoyuan City, Taiwan, received a 17-year and 6-month prison sentence for sexually assaulting her 12-year-old student multiple times in 2020. The assaults led to pregnancy and the birth of a child.
The teacher sexually assaulted the Standard 6 student nine times between February 25 and June 23, 2020. These incidents occurred during lunch breaks and class time at school.
She became pregnant in May 2020 and gave birth to a baby boy in 2021.
The abuse came to light when the boy’s father discovered what had happened and contacted police immediately.
During police questioning, the teacher tried to blame the student, claiming he started the relationship and took advantage of her. Prosecutors dismissed these claims.
The victim told investigators he was an unwilling participant, especially during the first two instances of sexual intercourse. He reported feeling scared and did not want the sexual contact.
The Taoyuan District Court found the teacher guilty on two counts of forcing sexual intercourse with a minor under age 14 and seven counts of having sex with a minor.
Beyond the prison term, the court permanently banned her from holding any teaching position under the Teachers Law. She lost her job as a result.
The teacher filed an appeal in 2024, arguing the sentence was “too heavy.”
After an initial evidence verification hearing, the appeals court held a second hearing on April 22, 2024, which lasted just 30 minutes.
Following this brief hearing, both the teacher and her attorney quickly left the courthouse without answering questions from the media.
The teacher’s appeal process continues as she challenges the length of her prison sentence.
