Climate adaptation technologies like flood protection, cooling systems and resilient construction materials could represent a US$9 trillion (S$11.7 trillion) global investment opportunity by 2050, according to a new report by Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund GIC.

This is a sharp rise from today’s US$2 trillion, driven by increasing climate risks and growing demand for solutions that protect communities and infrastructure, the report said. Developed with Bain & Company, the study highlights how private-sector investment in adaptation – often viewed as a government-only responsibility – could be both profitable and socially impactful.

“Companies offering weather intelligence, wind-resistant materials, and flood-proof construction methods are well-positioned for growth,” said the report, noting that these tools enhance resilience and reduce economic losses from disasters.

GIC said adaptation investments are less sensitive to different global warming scenarios, making them relatively stable compared to climate mitigation sectors like renewables. For example, investment value remained consistent whether the world hits 1.4°C or exceeds 4°C in warming by century’s end.

Adaptation solutions are also gaining urgency, with the UN pushing countries to have national adaptation plans by 2025, and disasters such as Pakistan’s 2022 floods spurring climate-resilient rebuilding.

Scientific research cited by GIC supports this shift: A 2021 study found that ambitious adaptation efforts could halve global climate risks, while another showed US$16 billion in annual investment in agriculture could prevent millions from falling into hunger.

GIC urged investors to watch key trends such as policy shifts, solution scalability, and the evolving severity of climate impacts. It also noted that although climate mitigation has drawn more investment research, adaptation now deserves equal focus.

“Investors can support economic and community resilience while earning strong risk-adjusted returns,” said GIC. “Adaptation is no longer just a cost – it’s an opportunity.”
