A father attacked his wife’s lover with a knife after his son told him about their intimate behavior. The incident happened in an Ang Mo Kio flat on January 25, 2011.
Zhang Lai Cai, now 60, stabbed a 50-year-old Chinese man after finding him in bed with his wife. The victim’s intestines spilled out from his stomach wound, requiring emergency surgery to save his life.
Court records show the victim was drinking with Zhang’s wife, daughter, and the victim’s daughter at a coffee shop near Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10 around midnight. They went back to the wife’s home to continue drinking afterward.
At about 3:00 AM, Zhang’s 20-year-old son argued with his mother after seeing her acting intimately with the victim. By 5:00 AM, the mother kicked her son out of the house along with his fiancée and their two-month-old baby.
The son called his father to report what happened. Zhang, who lived in Toa Payoh, became angry upon learning another man was in his wife’s home.
He grabbed a kitchen knife, wrapped it in newspaper, hid it in his pants, and went to meet his son.
They rang the doorbell and entered after Zhang’s younger son opened the door. They headed to the wife’s bedroom where she and the victim were sleeping.
After failed attempts to open the door, father and son kicked it down. Zhang then slashed the victim in the chest and stomach.
The injured man felt severe pain, noticed his protruding intestines, and sat on a sofa to stop the bleeding while waiting for an ambulance.
The victim’s daughter screamed after seeing his injuries. Zhang’s wife told their maid to clean up the blood.
Police found a woman asking for help at the foot of the HDB block at 6:28 AM that day.
Zhang pleaded guilty yesterday. His sentencing will happen on May 15.
After the attack, Zhang fled with his son. They threw the knife in a nearby garbage bin before leaving in a taxi.
He paid $1,500 to someone who helped him escape by boat from Changi Pier to Malaysia.
Zhang only came back to surrender on October 17, 2023. During questioning, he said he returned because he missed his family.
