Following recent online discussions, NTUC Secretary-General Ng Chee Meng has issued a statement addressing two main concerns: a past dinner photo and comments made at an MOE dialogue years ago.

Regarding a photo taken at a dinner with Su Haijin, Ng Chee Meng explained that as part of his job at NTUC, he regularly meets with business leaders. He stated that people often ask for photos at these events. He was unaware of the later police investigation and charges against Su at the time of the dinner and has had no contact with him since.

Ng Chee Meng also addressed online posts about a 2017 dialogue with MOE. He expressed his deep respect for teachers and acknowledged that he doesn’t remember his exact words from so long ago. He apologized if any of his comments were disrespectful, especially since the participants were asking questions sincerely. He admitted he could have handled the situation better and has taken the feedback to heart.

Looking ahead, Ng Chee Meng emphasized his commitment to his roles as the Member of Parliament for Jalan Kayu and as the Secretary-General of NTUC, stating that the needs of his constituents and Singaporean workers are his top priorities. He also announced that he has asked the Prime Minister not to give him any position in the government, and the Prime Minister has agreed to consider this. Ng Chee Meng affirmed his continued dedication to serving Singapore and Singaporeans.

With the General Election now over, and recognizing the divisions that may have arisen during the campaign, it is now crucial to move forward with unity. Respecting the democratic process and the people’s decision is paramount, and the focus should shift from division to working together for the common good.
