Hup Kee Fried Oyster Omelette stall at Newton Food Centre faced wrong closure rumors after a brief pause in operations.
The husband-wife team has run the stall since the 1960s. After the husband’s death from liver cancer on April 21, 2025, the wife temporarily closed the stall to handle funeral matters.
This short break sparked false claims online that the stall had permanently shut down. When reporters visited on April 26, 2025, the stall was closed but cooking tools remained inside.
The stall resumed business on April 30, 2025. Owner Wang Yumei, 77, told reporters she had taken time off for her husband’s funeral.
Wang and her husband started their oyster omelette business in the 1960s and moved to Newton Food Centre in 1976.
Her husband stepped back from the business ten years ago due to health issues. Wang now runs the stall with one helper.
“When my husband worked, we stayed open until midnight. Now we close at 10 PM,” Wang said.
Wang currently rests on Sundays and Mondays. She might adjust to working four days a week soon, as her children worry about her health.
Wang was unaware of the closure rumors. She thanked loyal customers, noting some families have eaten at the stall for three generations.
Wang arrives at 2 PM daily to prep ingredients and works until about 10 PM.
Her children don’t want to take over the stall. Wang has no plans to sell the recipe yet.
“Making oyster omelette looks easy but needs lots of skill. If I retire, we’ll see who takes over,” she said.
Wang shared she might retire in one or two years.
