The police are investigating 13 young individuals over two incidents involving the vandalism of wheelchairs stationed at designated polling venues ahead of the May 3 General Election.

In a May 1 statement, the police said the wheelchairs, which were provided by the Elections Department (ELD) for elderly and disabled voters, were damaged in separate cases at Sengkang West and Boon Lay.

The first incident took place on April 28 near Block 51A Sengkang West Avenue. At around 10.55pm, officers responded to a report and found three ELD-owned wheelchairs had been damaged. Preliminary investigations suggest five individuals raced each other using the wheelchairs, and one person allegedly threw a wheelchair into the air.

The second case occurred on May 1 at a sheltered basketball court at Block 176B Boon Lay Drive, also designated as a polling station. One wheelchair was damaged, and eight suspects have been identified.

Under Singapore law, anyone found guilty of vandalism may face up to three years’ jail, a fine of up to $2,000, and caning of between three and eight strokes.
