Workers’ Party (WP) chief Pritam Singh will continue as Leader of the Opposition, confirmed Prime Minister Lawrence Wong in a Facebook post on May 5. Singh will retain the staff and resources needed to fulfil his role.
PM Wong acknowledged WP’s strong performance in the recent general election, highlighting the party’s effective campaign and strengthened presence in Parliament. WP retained Aljunied GRC, Sengkang GRC, and Hougang SMC, returning 10 elected Members of Parliament.
Despite not winning new constituencies, the party secured over 40% of votes in areas like Tampines and Jalan Kayu, which qualifies it for two Non-Constituency MP (NCMP) seats under Singapore’s electoral rules.
Mr Singh first became Leader of the Opposition after the 2020 General Election, when WP won Sengkang GRC. His responsibilities include offering alternative policy views, leading debates, and holding the Government to account in Parliament.
The 2025 election saw WP reaffirm its hold on key constituencies. In Aljunied GRC, the party’s five-member team earned 59.68% of votes. Hougang SMC saw WP win with 62.17%, while Sengkang GRC was retained with 56.31%.
While the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) gained ground nationally, WP’s support remained strong in its traditional strongholds. PM Wong said he looks forward to WP’s continued contributions in Parliament.
