A 37-year-old woman received an eight-week jail sentence for repeatedly demanding money from her 70-year-old mother and using threats and violence when denied.

Chen Mei Shan faced eight charges including intimidation and criminal violence at the State Courts on Tuesday (6 May 2025). The court proceeded on three charges while considering the remaining charges for sentencing.

The victim lived in the same housing unit as her daughter. A personal protection order against Chen had been in place since August 2023.

On 23 Aug 2024 morning, the mother called police after Chen demanded $150 without explanation. When refused, Chen pushed her mother’s shoulder. As the mother tried to leave home, Chen grabbed her arm and repeatedly asked her to borrow money from others. During this struggle, the mother lost balance and hurt her right knee.

In October 2024, the protection order was changed to stop Chen from entering her mother’s bedroom.

On 18 Feb 2025 evening, the mother reported at Woodlands East Neighbourhood Police Centre that Chen had demanded $140 and threatened to push or kill her if she didn’t comply. The mother gave Chen the money out of fear.

On 3 Mar 2025 evening, the mother called police again reporting physical abuse. Around 9:55 PM, while doing laundry on the balcony, Chen asked for $150. When denied, Chen pushed her mother’s back and left arm. The protection order was still active during this incident.

Police arrested Chen the following day. During her court plea, Chen stated she would change her behavior after serving her prison term.
