Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has received calls and messages from leaders across Asia and beyond, congratulating him on his party’s win in Singapore’s 2025 General Election. The ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) secured 65.57% of the vote and 87 out of 97 parliamentary seats in PM Wong’s first election as leader.
Among the first to call was Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who also won re-election on May 3. In a congratulatory letter, PM Wong praised the strong partnership and mutual strategic trust between the two countries. Both leaders reaffirmed plans to strengthen ties at the upcoming Singapore-Australia Annual Leaders’ Meeting, which will coincide with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations.
PM Wong highlighted growing cooperation in areas such as defence, trade, education, digital innovation, and the green economy.
Other congratulatory calls came from Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, and Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay. PM Wong described the calls as productive and said he looked forward to meeting these leaders in person soon.
Mr Anwar noted the PAP’s “resounding victory” as a sign of public confidence in PM Wong’s leadership, and expressed optimism about deepening Malaysia-Singapore ties during Malaysia’s Asean chairmanship.
Mr Prabowo, who posted footage of their call online, expressed a personal wish to visit Singapore soon to congratulate PM Wong directly. PM Wong had been the first foreign leader to visit Jakarta after Mr Prabowo took office in 2024.
Mr Tobgay, a fellow alumnus of Harvard Kennedy School, described PM Wong as a “good friend” and invited him to visit Bhutan, calling the election result a reflection of strong public trust.
Global leaders, including those from the US, Europe, Japan, Taiwan and New Zealand, have also extended congratulations since May 4.
