In a bizarre turn of events, a Singaporean man recently found himself in a dilemma when a food order was mistakenly left on his doorstep, prompting him to take the unprecedented step of calling the police for assistance. Concerned about the unknown package that he had not ordered, the man felt uneasy about handling it and decided to seek help.
“I was perplexed as I had not made an order for food,” the man shared with Mothership. The incident unfolded on May 7, 2025, when he discovered the unclaimed food hanging from the gate of his residence without any indication of the intended recipient.
After contacting the delivery platform, he was advised to either “keep or dispose” of the food item, despite reiterating that he was not the intended customer. Frustrated by the lack of support, he reached out to the authorities, leading to the police responding to the unusual request and eventually disposing of the food to alleviate the man’s concerns.
In his pursuit of a resolution, the man further escalated the issue by filing a formal complaint with the Consumers Association of Singapore (Case). However, his efforts hit a roadblock when Case informed him that they could not intervene as the case did not involve a payment dispute and fell outside their regulatory scope.
Expressing his dissatisfaction with the handling of the situation, the man highlighted a significant gap in accountability, stating, “This highlights a dangerous gap in accountability. When a private delivery company causes a safety issue for an uninvolved third party, no agency is responsible.”
With the delivery platform explaining that retrieving the mistakenly delivered food was not feasible due to hygiene and logistical reasons, the man found himself stuck in a predicament where the only options presented were to either keep or dispose of the item. The lack of a satisfactory resolution left him adamant about raising awareness regarding the implications of such delivery errors on public safety.
