In response to the recent closure of Jetstar Asia, which will result in the retrenchment of over 500 employees, the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) is actively exploring avenues to support these affected individuals. Labour chief Ng Chee Meng has revealed that NTUC is in discussions with the Singapore Airlines (SIA) Group to potentially match retrenched Jetstar Asia staff to suitable roles within the SIA organization. This initiative aims to provide alternative employment opportunities for retrenched employees.
Ng Chee Meng emphasized the significance of assisting the affected Jetstar Asia employees, acknowledging their dedication and contributions to the airline over the years. He stated, “The news of Jetstar Asia’s closure is a hit for the many employees of the airline. They have contributed much to the airline over the years.” This sentiment reflects the commitment to ensuring that the retrenched individuals are supported during this transitional period.
In addition to the collaboration with SIA, NTUC Aerospace, and Aviation Cluster, in conjunction with the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore and Changi Airport Group, are actively identifying potential opportunities for the retrenched employees in the aviation sector. Ng Chee Meng highlighted that the support provided to the affected workers extends beyond financial compensation, with efforts focused on offering career coaching, skills upgrading, and employability assistance.
Jetstar Asia has affirmed its commitment to assisting the retrenched employees by providing them with appropriate retrenchment packages and employment support. The closure of Jetstar Asia is part of a strategic restructuring by its parent company, Qantas, and the retrenched employees will receive redundancy payments and other benefits as per the Tripartite Advisory on Managing Excess Manpower and Responsible Retrenchment.
The support for the affected employees also extends to on-site assistance at Changi Airport Terminal 1, where NTUC and NTUC’s Employment and Employability Institute (e2i) will be present to provide direct support. Jetstar Asia has initiated efforts to collaborate with other airlines and aviation companies to facilitate alternative job opportunities for the retrenched staff.
