In the wee hours of the morning, while much of Singapore was still enveloped in slumber, a notable trio embarked on a special journey. Acting Minister for Transport Jeffrey Siow, along with Senior Minister of State Sun Xueling and NTWU Executive Secretary Yeo Wan Ling, rose early to pay a memorable visit to the Sengkang West Bus Depot (SWD). The purpose of their visit was not to conduct a press conference or attend a high-level meeting but to connect with the unsung heroes who play a vital role in keeping Singapore’s transport system running seamlessly.
SBS Transit CEO Jeffrey Sim warmly welcomed the esteemed guests, bus captains, and technicians with a hearty breakfast before the start of their shifts. Minister Siow took this opportunity to engage personally with the transport workers, attentively listening to their narratives and gaining insights into the challenges they encounter in their daily responsibilities.
Following the breakfast session, the visitors were treated to an exclusive tour of the SWD facilities. Noteworthy among them was SWD’s status as Singapore’s pioneering multi-storey bus depot designed to support the extensive deployment of electric buses. The guests were impressed by the depot’s cutting-edge EV charging systems with intelligent technology, which were showcased during the visit.
A standout feature of the depot that captured their attention was the staff quarters located on-site, a concept novel to Singapore. This eight-storey residence has the capacity to accommodate up to 350 transport workers, complete with 39 apartment units featuring ensuite toilets, kitchens, and yard spaces.
In a Facebook post, SBS Transit expressed sincere appreciation to Minister Siow, Ms. Sun, and Ms. Yeo for their early-morning visit and unwavering support to the transport sector. Minister Siow, reflecting on his experience, acknowledged the challenges faced by bus captains and depot staff, remarking, “The job of a bus captain or depot staff is not easy.” He emphasized the dedication of these personnel who work tirelessly to ensure Singaporeans can reach their destinations.
