A tragic incident unfolded in Vietnam’s famous Ha Long Bay on the evening of July 19, when a tourist boat named “Wonder Sea” capsized during a sudden and severe thunderstorm. The vessel, which was carrying 53 people – 48 passengers and five crew members – overturned less than an hour into its sightseeing journey, leading to a devastating loss of life. Authorities have confirmed that 38 people were killed in the incident.
The “Wonder Sea” had set sail at 12:55 PM that Saturday for a scenic tour around the beautiful limestone islands of Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its stunning blue-green waters. However, at around 1:30 PM, the weather took a dramatic turn. What started as a sunny day quickly changed to dark clouds, bringing a squall, thunder, lightning, and even hail. Due to violent gusts of wind and heavy seas, the ship tragically capsized, throwing some passengers and crew into the water. Its GPS signal was reportedly lost about 30 minutes after the storm began. The severe weather conditions were attributed to a local storm or “whirlwind,” rather than being directly linked to the initial effects of Typhoon Wipha, though the typhoon was approaching northern Vietnam.
Among the 48 passengers were 20 children, with the youngest passenger being just three years old and the oldest at 53. Most of those on board were reportedly families from Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam. All the individuals on the boat were Vietnamese nationals.
Around 300 rescuers, including over 20 specialized divers, were quickly deployed to the scene. They worked tirelessly through the night, battling heavy rain, rough seas, and poor visibility to search for survivors and victims. Rescue teams utilized various methods, including divers searching inside the vessel and nearby waters, surface vessels patrolling with nets and sonar, and even speedboats and drones to expand the search area. By early the next morning, the wreckage of the “Wonder Sea” was successfully raised and towed to the wharf.
Local news sources reported that 11 individuals were rescued from the capsized boat. Tragically, one of these rescued passengers later succumbed to their injuries in the hospital. As of the latest reports, search teams are still looking for five people who remain missing. One of the survivors, a 10-year-old boy, bravely recounted his terrifying ordeal to state media, saying, “I took a deep breath, swam through a gap, dived, then swam up. I even shouted for help, then I was pulled up by a boat with soldiers.”
Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh extended his condolences to the families of those who died. He also issued instructions for authorities to “investigate and clarify the cause of the incident and strictly handle violations,” signaling a thorough inquiry into what led to the disaster. Ha Long Bay is a hugely popular tourist destination, attracting millions of visitors each year, making this accident one of the deadliest in its history. Authorities have also noted that unfavorable weather, including continued thunderstorms and rainfall, is expected in the coming days as Typhoon Wipha makes its way towards northern Vietnam.
