Community Support Saves Wala Wala Cafe Bar from Closure

Wala Wala Cafe Bar to Remain Open in Holland Village

Wala Wala Cafe Bar, a long-standing establishment in Holland Village, has reversed its earlier decision to close and will now remain open. The bar had previously planned to cease operations after more than three decades, citing various challenges. This decision was met with an overwhelming outpouring of support from the community, which ultimately led to a new agreement with its landlord.

The initial announcement of the bar’s planned closure was made in June. The owner, Stanley Yeo, told The Business Times at the time that he was seeking a new tenant for the space, which he planned to vacate before his lease expired at the end of the year. He had cited dwindling foot traffic, rising operational costs, and a challenging labor market as key reasons for the difficult decision.

However, the news of the impending closure prompted a significant show of support from patrons. The Wala Wala team expressed their gratitude for this response in a subsequent Instagram post, noting that they were “deeply moved by the overwhelming support from our community—customers, friends, suppliers and neighbours alike. Your visits, stories, and kind words have reminded us of the role Wala Wala has played in so many lives.” The surge in visitors following the announcement of the closure also highlighted the venue’s importance to the community.

The bar’s landlord, recognizing the establishment’s cultural significance and the strong community backing, “kindly offered revised terms that make it feasible for us to stay.” This new agreement will allow the bar, which opened in 1993, to continue its run as a fixture in Holland Village’s nightlife scene. The news provides a hopeful counterpoint to the recent trend of other long-standing establishments in the neighborhood, such as Thambi Magazine Store and Lim’s Holland Village, closing down. While renovations are planned, the team has stated that “we want to keep the spirit of what made Wala, Wala,” ensuring that the core identity of the venue, including its live music, good vibes, and sense of community, will be preserved.
