Father Punches Man at Children’s Playground, Victim Hospitalized for Two Weeks

A 39-year-old father punched a 56-year-old man at an inflatable playground, causing multiple facial fractures that required two weeks of hospitalization.

The incident happened on 3 Sep 2023 at Bouncy Paradise in Pandan Gardens. Wang Chunxiong had brought his two young children and other family members for a play session.

Wang’s son told him an adult had scolded him. Wang brought his son to confront the person – the victim – who was sitting in a ball pit with his child.

The victim said Wang’s son had hit his child, which made him intervene. Wang asked for more details about what happened.

Their talk became heated. The victim got out of the ball pit and moved his head close to Wang’s. Wang stepped back. The two men continued talking face-to-face before the dispute grew worse.

CCTV footage showed both men pushing and making gestures at each other. Wang then punched the left side of the victim’s face. The victim fell backwards into the ball pit.

Wang also used vulgar language during the fight. Police came to the scene shortly after.

The punch caused at least four displaced fractures to the victim’s face and two additional non-displaced ones. Doctors diagnosed him with “complex facial fractures.” He stayed in the hospital for two weeks.

One month after the attack, he still had facial deformities and abnormal facial sensations. Wang had only minor bruising on his knuckles and did not get medical help.

Wang said he acted in self-defense and pleaded not guilty to voluntarily causing grievous hurt. The court rejected his account after trial.

The judge said CCTV footage showed Wang pushed the victim first. The older man did not fight back. The court ruled that Wang’s use of force – especially hitting a vulnerable part of the body – went far beyond reasonable self-defense.

The judge said Wang had several non-violent options in the public setting. He could have walked away or called for help.

Wang was found guilty after trial. He also faces a second charge under the Protection from Harassment Act, which has been temporarily shelved. Prosecutors have asked for it to be considered during sentencing.

Sentencing is scheduled for 9 Oct 2025.
