Man Pleads Guilty to Stealing Laptop, Router, and Spectacles from Funan

Frenchman Sentenced to Mandatory Treatment Order for Stealing S$4,000 Worth of Items from Funan Mall

A 57-year-old French national, identified as Stephane Christophe Bernard Piot, has been sentenced to a 12-month Mandatory Treatment Order (MTO) following a series of thefts from three retail stores at Funan Mall. The incidents occurred within a single week and involved the theft of items valued at a total of S$4,024.

The thefts took place at various points between late February and early March. On February 24, Piot stole a router worth S$899 from an electronics store. A few days later, on February 28, he took a pair of spectacles valued at S$326 from an optician in the same mall. The final and most significant theft occurred on March 2, when he stole a laptop worth S$2,799 from another electronics retailer.

In court on August 22, Piot pleaded guilty to two of the three theft charges. The third charge was taken into consideration during his sentencing. Instead of a prison term, he was handed a Mandatory Treatment Order, which requires him to undergo psychiatric treatment at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH). The decision to pursue an MTO suggests that the court considered a psychiatric condition to be a contributing factor to his actions.

His lawyer commented on the court’s decision, stating that Piot was willing to cooperate with the MTO, though they did not provide further details on his mental condition. This legal outcome highlights a focus on rehabilitation and addressing the underlying causes of the offense, rather than just punishment.
