19 people at MacPherson pre-school develop gastroenteritis

Seventeen children and two employees from E-Bridge Pre-School’s Circuit Road branch in MacPherson fell ill with gastroenteritis symptoms starting 9 Sep 2025.

Nobody needed hospital treatment. The Communicable Diseases Agency, Early Childhood Development Agency and Singapore Food Agency confirmed this in a joint statement on 14 Sep 2025.

What’s happening now

Authorities are investigating the suspected gastroenteritis cases at the pre-school. ECDA is watching the situation closely and working with the school operator to protect student and staff health.

The agency told the pre-school to follow infection prevention and control guidelines. Pre-schools must stick to food safety and hygiene requirements in the Early Childhood Development Centres Code of Practice.

Several affected people were diagnosed with viral or suspected gastroenteritis after seeing doctors. Eight children returned to school by 16 Sep 2025. The rest are recovering at home.

E-Bridge Pre-School acted fast after the outbreak hit. Staff moved sick children to the sick bay and sent them home quickly.

The school disinfected affected classrooms and common areas with diluted bleach solution. Cleaning happened more often across the whole centre.

A professional cleaning company deep cleaned the premises on the evening of 11 Sep 2025. The school contacted all families with children at the centre, including those in classes that weren’t affected.

Teachers check in daily with families whose children are still absent. Parents of affected children got individual calls from school staff.

What is gastroenteritis

Gastroenteritis means inflammation of the stomach and intestines. Infections from bacteria, parasites or viruses in contaminated food, water or surfaces usually cause it.

People get fever, vomiting and stomach pain. Mass-cooked food sees this problem more often. This video explains why: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AnKttTDuYRI

Other recent cases

Two food poisoning cases hit pre-schools in August 2025.

24 children and two employees at PCF Sparkletots pre-school at Mountbatten Block 92 got sick on 23 Aug 2025. Everyone recovered and returned 26 Aug 2025.

17 children and one staff member at Mulberry Learning’s Punggol centre in Northshore Plaza developed gastroenteritis symptoms on 27 Aug 2025. Two children needed hospital care in that case.

SFA has been working with ECDA to strengthen food safety practices in pre-schools. The agency said food operators must follow good food safety practices.

SFA will take enforcement action against food operators who break the rules.

The cause of the current cases stays unconfirmed. E-Bridge Pre-School keeps updating ECDA, the Ministry of Health, and parents.
