Charlie Kirk, 31-year-old CEO of Turning Point USA, died from gunshot wounds sustained during a campus speaking event at Utah Valley University on September 10, 2025.

The fatal shooting happened around 12:00 PM local time in Orem, Utah. Kirk was conducting his “Prove Me Wrong” debate series outdoors when a gunman fired a single shot from approximately 100-200 yards away.

What Happened

Video recordings show Kirk being struck in the neck while addressing a crowd under a white tent. Witness Raydon DeChene stood near the front and saw “blood pouring out everywhere and his eyes kind of rolled back.”

The shot came from behind the audience, up a hill. Kirk had been debating a student about mass shootings and gun violence at the moment the gunfire erupted. Security immediately evacuated Kirk from the scene. Medical teams rushed him to a nearby hospital in critical condition where he later died.

Investigation Status

The shooter remains unidentified and at large. Law enforcement initially detained two people for questioning but released both after interrogation.

FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed a person of interest was questioned and subsequently released from custody. Police searched buildings across campus and canvassed surrounding neighborhoods. Officers have been showing photographs to residents, asking for identification assistance regarding a person of interest.

Kirk’s Profile

Kirk co-founded Turning Point USA, which now operates on more than 3,500 college campuses across America. The organization has raised tens of millions of dollars for conservative political campaigns. He hosted a widely-followed podcast and became known for his campus debate format.

Kirk played a key role in Donald Trump’s strategy to engage younger voters during the 2024 campaign cycle. The Utah Valley University appearance was the opening event of Kirk’s fall “American Comeback Tour.” His schedule included upcoming stops at Penn State, University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, and Virginia Tech.

Political Response

President Trump announced Kirk’s death on Truth Social: “The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead. No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie.”

Trump labeled Kirk “a martyr for truth and freedom” and blamed “radical left” rhetoric for contributing to his death. He ordered flags flown at half-staff until Sunday.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox characterized the fatal shooting as a “political assassination.” Vice President JD Vance called Kirk “a genuinely good guy and a young father.”

Former President Barack Obama said: “This type of political violence has no place in our democracy.” Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed his “heartbreak and outrage” over the attack.

House Speaker Mike Johnson requested a moment of silence to honor Kirk. This tribute sparked heated Congressional debate over appropriate timing.

Kirk is survived by his wife Erika and two young children.
