The well-known Chong Pang Gateway in Yishun is scheduled for demolition to make way for a new, large-scale development. The new project will be known as Chong Pang City. This announcement was made by Minister for Home Affairs and Yishun MP, K Shanmugam. The good news is that after the new project is finished, the gateway is set to be rebuilt around 2027.
A Look Back at the Gateway’s History
The gateway is one of two in Chong Pang that has a traditional Chinese-style design. The one that’s being torn down is located at 126 Yishun Street 11. It was first built in 1992 by a group of “entrepreneurial shopkeepers” working with the town council.
At the time, businesses in the area were struggling. After the Northpoint mall opened nearby, business had dropped by 20 percent. The shopkeepers and town council decided to act. Their plan was to “spruce up” the area and help local businesses. Besides building the gateway, they also made other improvements, like installing metal awnings and paving the ground with concrete. These changes worked, and business quickly improved by nearly 30 percent.
What’s Coming Next
The demolition of the old gateway is a necessary step for the new Chong Pang City project. The new development is expected to be a major hub and will likely attract more people to the area. While the old structure will be gone, a new one will take its place in 2027. This shows that the area is moving forward with modern developments while still keeping a link to its past.
